Experienced Christchurch Builder, Paul Reed, completes new home build that capitalises on its’ prime hillside location

With the original 1930’s bungalow a write off after the Christchurch earthquakes a full replacement house was constructed on the original site. Located at the foothills of the Port Hills in the suburb of Hillsborough, this contemporary-modern family home was a challenging build requiring highly engineered foundations cut into the hillside. The new home capitalises on its’ prime hillside location; enormous picture windows frame the unobstructed views across the city and beyond to the Southern Alps.

Construction of 1930s Replica Bungalow Begins

Construction of this 1930s replica bungalow has begun.

There seems to be an old adage “they don’t make houses like they used to.” This new build, a replica of the original 1930’s bungalow, will take the old and merge it with the new. Features that can be saved, repaired, and restored are – including the coloured lead light windows.

The existing home suffered irreparable damage during the Christchurch earthquakes. The owner feared her new home would lose the character and charm  that she loved of her old home.

Paul Reed Homes listened to her fears about building new, and worked with the owner towards an agreeable solution. The answer was for hew new home to be constructed as a replica of the original 1930’s Bungalow, with anything that could be saved from the old home kept and restored to be used in the new. The coloured lead glass windows were carefully removed prior to demolition. These will be repaired and restored to be used in the new house, along with other saveable character features.

You can follow the construction of this new build on our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/paulreedhomes

Hand crafted roof trusses craned into place

There was excitement at our build in the inner city suburb of Carlton Mill as our team craned these magnificently hand crafted roof trusses into place. With each truss weighing a few hundred kilograms, timing and precision were key. These trusses will be left exposed in the main living areas to create an eye catching feature in the finished home.

Christchurch Master Builder, Paul Reed, shows us how this new home build is blending the old with the new.

This project really excites us as we are blending the old with the new to create something truly unique and special. Paul shows us the stunning heritage lead glass windows that have been carefully repaired, restored and re-glazed into double glazed units.

The attention to detail for this home is outstanding – and as our contract carpenters have said it’s been a long time since they’ve worked on something like this using classic carpentry techniques. This new home build has provided great learning opportunities for the apprenticeship carpenters.

We can’t wait to show you more of the heritage details that we are putting back into this very special new home build.

Step back in time with Paul as he takes you through this completed 1930s Replica Bungalow

Christchurch career professional builder Paul Reed and his team have created something truly outstanding with this new home build.

At first glance you’d be forgiven for thinking this home was a long standing fixture on its’ busy Christchurch street. Similar bungalows on either side suggest that the dwelling is well established, just undergoing a recent cosmetic makeover with a lick of paint freshening up its exterior. However this bungalow is circa 2016, a replica of the original 1930s bungalow that once stood in its place. The original home suffered irreparable damage during the Christchurch earthquakes and the owner feared her new home would lose the character and charm of the old house. Paul Reed Homes has done a masterful job blending the old and the new. The stunning coloured lead glass windows have been carefully repaired, restored and re-glazed into double glazed units. The old claw foot bath lovingly refurbished to sit pride of place in the main bathroom. New ceiling roses encircle the pendant lighting in the main living areas and bedrooms. The clever use of modern design sees an ensuite added off the master bedroom and plenty of storage added with built in robes in the bedrooms and linen cupboard in the hallway. Keeping in style of the original home, picture rails have been installed in perfect alignment with window sashes. The warm wood wall panelling with a dado rail along the top in entry and hallway shows the craftsmanship and attention to detail that has been put into this home. The end result is a testament to career professional builder Paul Reed and his team. Check out the video below.
